சோழ நாட்டில் பௌத்தம்

January 1995 While discussing on my subject historian Mr Kudavayil Balasubramanian advised me to go to the places which were connected with Buddhism. This became part of my field work resulting in searching of the names connected with Buddha or Buddhism. January 1999 As I had to submit my Ph.D., thesis before December 1999, the number of my field trips increased. In the meantime I collected the news items which appeared in newspapers and other works. Surprisingly, I came across a news item in a newspaper ( Dinamalar,  Tamil daily, 1.1.1999) in which it was reported that there was a Buddha. It read thus: "A Buddha statue was found at Buddhamangalam in Akarakadambanur panchayat union of Kilvelur taluk in Nagapattinam district. Some years back the head portion and the body portion were found without any body's care.  Some villagers took interest to retrieve them. ஜனவரி 1995 வரலாற்றறிஞர் முனைவர் குடவாயில் பாலசுப்ரமணியன் ஐயா அவர்களுடன் ஆய்வு தொடர்பாக விவாதித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது பௌத்தம் தொடர்பான பெயர்கள் உள்ள ஊர்களைப் பார்க்கும்படிக் கூறியிருந்தார். என்னுடைய ஆய்வின் ஒரு பகுதியாக இவ்வாறான ஊர்களைத் தேடலும் அமைந்தது. ஜ னவரி 1999 டிசம்பர் 1999க்குள் முனைவர் பட்டத்திற்கான ஆய்வேட்டை பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் அளிப்பதற்கு வசதியாக அதிகமாக களப்பணி  மேற்கொண்டிருந்தேன். நாளிதழ்களிலும், பிற நூல்களிலும் வரும் செய்திகளைத் தொகுத்து வந்தேன். இந்நிலையில் நாளிதழில் (துண்டித்த தலையுடன் கூடிய புத்தர் சிலை,  தினமலர் , 1.1.1999)  ஒரு செய்தியைக் கண்டேன். April 2012 Since the time of started doing research on Buddhism - 1993 - friends, scholars and well wishers used to share the information pertaining to the Buddha they saw or heard. In such a way I got an information from Dr. B.Sundaresan, who was in charge of the Director in the Tamil University Library. He said that there was a Buddha in Poraryar of Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu. During my field study in Nagapattinam district I saw Buddha in Buddhamangalam, Kurumbur, Kutthalam, Perunjeri, Poompuhar and Pushpavanam. I had not been to Poraryar on field work so far. I expected the day to see the Buddha. ஏப்ரல் 2012 1993இல் பௌத்த ஆய்வு தொடங்கியது முதல் அவ்வப்போது நண்பர்களும், அறிஞர்களும், ஆர்வலர்களும் எங்கு புத்தர் சிலையைப் பார்த்தாலும் அச்சிலை பற்றிய செய்தியை என்னோடு பரிமாறிக் கொள்ள ஆரம்பித்தனர். அவ்வகையில் எனக்கு ஒரு தகவல் கிடைத்தது. தமிழ்ப்பல்கலைக்கழக நூலகத்தில்  இயக்குநர் பொறுப்பில் இருந்த முனைவர் பா. சுந்தரேசன் அவர்கள் நாகப்பட்டினம் மாவட்டத்தில் பொறையார் அருகே ஒரு புத்தர் சிற்பம் இருப்பதாகக் கூறினார். நாகப்பட்டினம் மாவட்டத்தில் புத்தமங்கலம், குறும்பூர், குத்தாலம், பெருஞ்சேரி, பூம்புகார், புஷ்பவனம் ஆகிய இடங்களில் புத்தர் சிலைகளை எனது களப்பணியின்போது நான் பார்த்துள்ளேன். இவர் கூறிய பகுதியில் நான் களப்பணி மேற்கொள்ளவில்லை. அதற்கான நாளை ஆவலோடு எதிர்பார்த்தேன். சோழ நாட்டில் காணப்படும் புத்தர் சிலைகள் பெரும்பாலும் பிற்காலச் சோழர் காலத்தைச் சார்ந்தவையாகவே உள்ளன. அவ்வாறான ஒரு புதிய சிலையைக் காணப்போகிறோம் என்ற மகிழ்ச்சியோடு   பொறையார் புத்தரைக் காணும் நாளை ஆவலோடு எதிர்நோக்கியிருந்தேன். மே 2012 களப்பணியாக திருச்சி சென்றபோது நண்பர் முனைவர் தி.நெடுஞ்செழியன் அவர்களைச் சந்திக்கும்...

August 1998 During field study in Vedaranyam area I came to know that there was Buddha statues at Veerankudikadu in Nagapattinam-Venankanni road.  2 007  During field study I came to know that at Karuvelankadai in the west of Thenpoikainallur in Nagapattinam-Venankanni road there was a Buddha statue.   October 2012 Mr.K.Ramachandran, Principal Secretary of Nagapattinam Historical Enthusiast's Assocation,  who accompanied us during our field study of November 2011 sent me a photograph of Buddha statue and said that Buddha was found at Kiranthi in Kilvelur taluk of Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu.
