சோழ நாட்டில் பௌத்தம்

Since 1993 I have been on field work in search of Buddha statues. On some occasions I saw the Buddhas which were notified by other scholars. I  also had a chance of finding new Buddhas. The experiences were many. Though I registered for M.Phil., in Madurai Kamaraj University, in October 1993, it took some time for me to take notes and get information during the field work. After realising the importance of the sources I started recording them, and am continuing till date. I feel happy to share with you, from my notes, a brief account on my field work which I carried on a particular day.      20.1.1999 Field work Sannapuram, Putthakaram, and Seeyatthamangai   Sannapuram On the bus to Nagapattinam through Nacchiyarkovil-Nannilam route. Having came to know that there was a Buddha in Ayiraveli Ayilur, Trichy district, Tamil Nadu, I had been there and saw the Buddha. After more than a decade on the basis of information received from a TV crew stating that there was a Buddha near Musiri I went there and saw the same Buddha.  June 1999 In those days, whenever I meet a scholar or participate in a function I had the habit of enquiring them about Buddha statue. I felt that whatever the information I get would help for my research.  In this background, on the margins of the seminar held under the auspices of Tamil Nadu Archaeological Society held at Pondicherry, I had the chance of meeting - among man y scholars and friends  -  Mr C.Santhalingam of Tamil Nadu State Archaeology. ஆயிரவேலி அயில ூர் என்னுமிடத்தில சிலை இருப்பதாகக் கேள்வி ப்பட்டு, அவ்வூரைத் தேடி புத்தர் சிலையைக் கண்டதும், முசிறி அருகே ஒரு புத்தர் சிலை இருப்பதாக த ொலைக்காட்சி நிருபர் என்னை அழைக்க, அது புதிய சிலை என நினைத்துக்க ொண்டு ஆவலாகச் சென்று மறுபடியும் அதே புத்தரை ப் பார்த்ததும் இம்மாதப் பகிர்வு.    ஜூலை 1999 எந்தவொரு அறிஞரைச் சந்தித்தாலும், நிகழ்வுகளில் கலந்துகொண்டாலும் புத்தர் சிலைகளைப் பற்றிய விவரங்களைக் கேட்டுத் தெரிந்துகொள்வதைப் பழக்கமாக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்த காலகட்டம். கிடைக்கும் எந்த ஒரு செய்தியும் ஆய்வுக்கு உதவும் என்பது என் நம்பிக்கை . இந்நிலையில் 24-25.7.1999இல் தமிழகத் தொல்லியல் கழகம் சார்பாக நடைபெற்ற ஒரு கருத்தரங்கிற்காக பாண்டிச்சேரிக்குச் சென்றிருந்தபோது பல அறிஞர்களையும், ஆய்வாளர்களையும் சந்திக்கும் வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது. அப்போது தொல்லியல் அலுவலர் திரு சொ.சாந்தலிங்கம் அவர்கள் "திருச்சி மாவட்டம், ஆயிரவேலி அயிலூர் என்னுமிடத்தில் ஒரு  புத்தர் சிலை உள்ளது. அதனைப் பார்த்துள்ளீர்களா? 30 September 2013 Dr A.Chandrabose (Assistant Professor, PG & Research Department of History, H.H.The Rajah's College, Pudukottai) who informed me about the presence of a Buddha statue in    Sundarapandianpattinam during September 1999, contacted me over phone to inform that he came to know about a Buddha statue in Pudukottai. He asked me if I saw any Buddha statue in that area saying that there were many Jain statues. I told him that I am unaware of the presence of any Buddha and expressed my wish to go over there.  1 October 2013 F rom press reports, quoting Dr Chandrabose, I came to know that there was a Buddha, measuring 3.5' height and 3' breadth, in Kavinadu tank near Kattiyavayal at Pudukottai-Kudumiyanmalai road in Pudukottai of Tamil Nadu .
