December 1999 Archaeologist Mr K. Sridharan, who was instrumental in  helping me to identify a Buddha with moustache in Mangalam , Trichy district, was one among the scholars who were helping to my research. The newspaper cli p ping of 1978 of The Mail (date not available) sent by him helped me to locate a head of Buddha statue in Perantakottai, situated on the Thanjavur-Mannargudi road, at a distance of 12 km from Thanjavur.      From the newspaper clipping it was learnt that a Buddha statue of 11th century CE was identified by the State Archaeology of Government of Tamil Nadu. In the accompanying photograph a head of Buddha was found. Based on the information sent by him I went to Perantakottai (next to Kattur and Padikkolam bus stops) on the Thanjavur-Vaduvur town bus. When I enquired about the Buddha I could not get any information. I continued my enquiry and continued to walk. When I asked for Buddha the locals looked me surpisingly. Still I had a dou...

1960 Among others P.R.Srinivasan (1960) and Sivaramalingam (1997) discussed about the Buddha statue found in Manambadi. French Institute of Pondicherry has in its collection the photograph of Manambadi Buddha. ) There is reference in Tamil Nattu Varalaru: Chola Peruvendar Kaalam (1998) published by Government of Tamil Nadu. During my first field visit the statue which was found in neglected condition is now in worship.  April 1995 When I had discussion with scholars and friends many of them informed me of the Buddha found in Manambdi which was near Tiruppanandal. During my tete-a-tete with historian Mr Kumbakonam Sethuraman he talked about   the inscription found in Kumbakonam Kumbeswarar Temple which speaks about the Buddha temple in Elanthurai and hinted about Manambadi Buddha. I waited for a suitable date to see the Buddha. October 1998 After three years I had a chance of visiting Manambadi. My elder son Mr Bharath accompanied me.  After searching the rel...

In search of imprints of Buddhism: Puthur

Of all the field trips the one which stands in my mind was that of Puthur. During my two decade old research that was the very first time that I pedalled nearly 25 kms to see a Buddha  at Puthur in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu. The pains which I faced during that trip left me when it - the news of the finding of a Buddha - was informed through media.  April 1999 During my field work at Puthakaram and Pushpavanam I had the chance of going to I.Sengatti-Kaduveli. At that time Mr Govindaraj from the area enquired about my research. Then he asked me if I had seen the Buddha at Pushpavanam. When I told him that I would be going there to see it he informed me that there was a Buddha in Puthur. He also gave me the location of the place in detail. At that time only I came to know about the Buddha. Though I tried my level best to go over there, due to want of time I could able to go upto Pushpavanam only.   So many Buddhas were found in Tiruvarur district. I was ...
